Why Does My Heat Pump Run All the Time?

Q: My heat pump seems like it never shuts off, especially on hot or cold days. Is that normal, or does it mean something is wrong?

A: Heat pumps are designed to run longer, gentler cycles than traditional systems, especially in mild Florida weather. It’s normal for a properly sized heat pump to run a lot on the hottest afternoons and during cool snaps. But if it runs almost nonstop and still can’t keep you comfortable, or your bills are climbing, that can point to a problem with sizing, airflow, or system performance.

1. What’s Normal for Heat Pump Run Time?

Compared to older systems:

  • Heat pumps often have longer run times but smoother temperature control.
  • They may run “most of the time” on peak days while still working efficiently.
  • The key question is: Are you comfortable? If yes and bills are reasonable, long run times can be a good thing.

2. Signs Your Heat Pump Is Overworking

If your heat pump runs constantly and:

  • The home never reaches the set temperature, or
  • Only some rooms get comfortable, or
  • Your electric bill has jumped higher than usual

…then it’s time to look deeper.

3. Possible Causes of Excessive Run Time

Common issues Beacon sees include:

  • Dirty filters or coils restricting airflow.
  • Duct leaks pushing conditioned air into attics or crawlspaces.
  • Low refrigerant or performance problems with the outdoor unit.
  • A system that’s undersized for the home or added room additions.

4. Thermostat Settings That Make It Work Harder

Certain settings can make a heat pump feel like it’s always behind:

  • Very large temperature swings (for example, 78° to 68° all at once).
  • Frequent manual changes throughout the day.
  • Using EM HEAT unnecessarily, which bypasses the heat pump and uses more expensive backup heat.

5. What You Can Safely Check

Before calling for service, you can:

  • Change or clean the air filter if it’s dirty.
  • Make sure supply and return vents are open and unblocked.
  • Visually check that the outdoor unit is clear of leaves, sticks, or debris.

When to Call Beacon
